Just got my new off color, scratched trunk lid. So it needs paint - who has had success with having a shop paint a panel for you? What was it, and how much did it cost? I’m hoping this will be less than 500, especially if I do some of the prep. I don’t even want the underside done, just the two visible sides.
I imagine that if I find the right place, this should be inexpensive as long as I take the lights out/remove the badges myself?

My dad had his front bumper repainted on his MDX for 250 bucks I think... And of course it’s new factory paint, so it didn’t quite match what 14 years of fading on the rest of the car had done. But if you don’t look hard enough you’re not going to notice.

If you don’t want it to look mismatched you will have to get more than the trunk painted. Even with modern color matching, it just won’t look right unless you blend the color onto the surrounding panels. You could always wrap or go with the new generation liquid wrap/plasti-dip. The new stuff you can actually clear coat and add metallics to if you want some pop.

I had a rust spot fixed on my SRT-4 (paint chipped through to bare metal on the door aperture, I didn’t see it in time) and a local body shop charged me about $350, which included blending the paint along the side of the car.

idk I appreciate the advice but I have a hard time believing that a decent paint shop couldn’t get something very close to my color - we aren’t talking about a concours quality job here, just a decent match. If it’s slightly off, that’s fine - better than the rusty trunk I have now

don’t scoff. paint colors can be really hard to match. especially when you get into metallics and pearls.

it can be especially hard to match when the guy painting it gets lazy and just gives up or is incompetant or just doesnt care. Matching paint really reveals those who want to do a good job and the art of painting.
